Oedipus's tragic flaw is hubris.  Hubris is having excessive pride.  This will end up hurting him.

Before the book starts
Before the story in the play starts there were things that happened before.  These are that
*Laius and Jocasta had a baby (Oedipus).
*Tiresias tells them about the prophecy on how the baby will kill Laius and marry Jocasta.
*Laius and Jocasta decide that they will kill their newborn baby.
*The king and queens servent is supposed to take the baby and leave him to die.  Instead of doing this he gives the baby to a shepherd who brings the baby to the king of Cornith who raises the baby.
*He gets the name Oedipus which means "swollen foot"
*Oedipus grows up and leaves Cornith and ends up meeting his father at the 3 crossroads and kills him.
* Oedipus then sees a sphinx who wont let him pass unless he solves a riddle.
* Oedipus solves the riddle, kills the sphinx, ends a dark time in Thebes and becomes king
